Location: The well known Sankar Gompa is an eye catching monastery, which is located at a distance of 3 km from the city of Leh. This place is regarded as a subsidiary of the famous Spitok Gompa.
Description: The two storied Sankar Gompa takes its visitors between marvelous Ladakhi farmhouse and stone walls. Of all the Lamas present here, only few of them resides in the monastery permanently. This shrine can be visited by the travelers during the day time as well as in the evening. However, marking a visit in the evening is preferred by devotees as the monastery looks beautiful when all lit up. By climbing the steps, a person can reach a double door which leads into the assembly hall. The entry doors and walls of the shrine are exquisitely painted with rules for the monks and Tibetan calendar. A small prayer room is also present which is adorned by the portrait of Kushok Bakula Rinpoche, the former head lama of Ladakh.
Activities: After visiting the monastery, tourists can indulge in a number of adventurous activities, such as trekking, hiking, mountain cycling. These sports are carried under the supervision of an expert; therefore an amateur can also try his hand at different sports.
