This research institute was set up in the year 1906. Main aim of this institute is to concentrate on performing research and activities as are related with forests. In addition to its importance in the field of education and research, the institution is also famous for its constructional beauty. This institute is spread over a vast area of 4.5 square kilometers and surrounded by lush greenery. It is an impressive structure which has be constructed according to Greco-Roman and Colonial design. This is a deemed university and hosts six museums which are open for the common masses. The Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy is also located in this institute and the head office of Indian Council of Forestry Research is also placed here. The campus area of the Forest Research Institute named The New Forest is home to different types of animals that have been collected from the Himalayan belt. This area is considered suitable for trekking adventure.
