Location: Eglise de Notre Dame de la Conception Immaculee Church is located in the Union territory of Pondicherry. It is located on the Cathedral Street in Pondicherry town.
Description: Eglise de Notre Dame de la Conception Immaculee is a French word that means “The Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception”. In Roman Catholic Mariology, Immaculate Conception is one of the four dogmas maintaining that Blessed Virgin Mary was kept free of original sin since she was conceived in the womb. According to Baptism, she was from the start filled with sanctifying grace. Though the Cathedral was first built in year 1692 but it took its present shape in year 1791. It is a Cathedral Mother Church for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore. Also known as Samba Kovil, the church was consecrated by Bishop Champenois on 20th June, 1791. Devotees visit this church in huge numbers, which is now around 300 years old. There is an esplanade in front of the Church where tourists can take part in the ceremonies and special functions that are organized here. The interior and exterior of the Cathedral is magnificent and offers a peaceful place for meditation.
