Location: Situated in the capital city of Pondicherry, Raj Niwas is the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of Pondicherry.
Description: Built in the eighth century, Raj Niwas was an official residence of French Governor Dupleix in earlier times. Due to this reason, it is also famous as “Palais du Gouvernement” which means the Palace of Government. Presently, it serves at the residence ofthe Lieutenant Governor of Pondicherry, who conducts his work-related functions from here as well. Raj Niwas looks very similar to a royal palace where one can experience the luxurious and traditional hospitality of royals with all high class amenities. It is preserving many incredible historical and imposing evidences of French governancein India. The moment you step into this royal place, you will be astonished by its grand structure and splendid décor. The manicured garden of the palace, along with a wonderful water monument, makes it look really magnificent. Monolithic pillars of the palace are beautifully carved and it is one of the major attractions for tourists.
Activities: Besides admiring the majestic beauty of this royal palace, tourists can also see a four-meter tall statue of Mahatma Gandhi, surrounded by eight white granite pillars from Raj Niwas.
