Also known as the Temple of Rats, Karni Mata Temple is well known for worshiping of rats. Large number of black, grey and white rats can be seen roaming freely in this temple, among which white rats are believed to be the holiest because they are regarded as the manifestation of Karni Mata and her sons. Viewing white rats is considered auspicious; therefore people make efforts to bring them forth.
Feeding rats or eating food that is nibbled by them is believed to bring good fortune. Being 600 years old, this temple has a lot of stories attached with it. If a rat is killed by a tourist or by a devotee then it is required be replaced with a rat made up of solid gold.
Design of the temple gives a glimpse of Mughal architecture. Meshes are put up on the silver gates so as to protect the rats from the hovering birds. An image of Karni Mata holding trishul in her hand is also put up in the sanctum.
