Yercaud- A Natural Weekend Getaways Resort
Yercaud is a popular hill station located in a district called Salem in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is a part of the mighty Shevaroy hill range, which in turn is an integral part of the Eastern Ghats. Yercaud stands 1515 meters above ground and it spans over an area of approximately 383 square km. The name Yercaud has been derived from two different Tamil words. One is Yeri meaning lake, while the second one is Kadu meaning forest.
The region of Yercaud is popular for its several different kinds of plantations which mainly consist of orange, guava, coffee, black pepper and cardamom. The highest production amongst all these is of coffee. Mr. M.D. Cockburn brought coffee to Yercaud in the year of 1820 from Africa. Yercaud also includes a reserve forest terrain and it has fauna and flora in untouched form.
Sandalwood, Teak and Silver Oaks compose the flora found in forests in and around the region of Yercaud. Fauna on the other hand, includes Deer, Mongoose, Snakes, Bison, Foxes, Squirrels, Bulbuls, Kites, Sparrows, etc. Yercaud maintains a moderate climate and hence it is neither too hot nor too cold.
