Yamunotri- A pilgrimage center
In India, one of the most important pilgrimage centers is Yamunotri. It is one of the four dhams that Hindu followers ensure to visit once in their lifetime via Char Dham Yatra. Yamunotri is located at an elevation of roughly 3293 meters above sea level, in the Uttarkashi district of the state of Uttarakhand. Yamunotri is enclosed by mountains on all sides and the view is simply mesmerizing. Travelers are also provided with an opportunity to get a glimpse of the India and China border, which is located in the close neighborhood.
A temple dedicated to goddess Yamuna was founded near the banks of River Yamuna by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal. The idol of goddess Yamuna has been built with black marble. Near the temple is located a slab of stone, called Divya Shila. It symbolizes a source of divine light. All pilgrims halt here to worship this slab before proceeding towards the Yamunotri temple. One can spot hot water springs situated at Janki Chatti and these are one of the prime attractions of Yamunotri region. One of most important hot thermal spring of this region is Surya Kund. The Prasad served in the temples to all the worshippers is prepared using the water from these springs.
A small village located in the neighborhood of Yamunotri, called Kharsali, is also visited by many tourists on their trip to Yamunotri. Kharsali is known for the majestic waterfalls, natural springs and a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Trekking is one of the most common adventure activities performed here. One can travel throughout Yamunotri on rented horses or palanquins.
