SRINGERI- A Revered Holy Town
An important holy town, Sringeri is situated on the banks of River Tunga. Present in the Chikmagalur village, this town got its name from Rishyasringa, an important personality in Ramayana. It is believed that a Hindu Saint, Adi Shankaracharya established his first monastery on the land of Sringeri in 7th century; thereby making it a religiously important destination for the pilgrims who visit it all around the year.
A pilgrimage town, Sringeri houses a large number of temples which also include the 14th century Vidyashankara Temple. Located amidst a picturesque location, this temple lies on the banks of the river and provides a serene ambiance. The brilliance of Vijayanagar architectural style can be easily observed from the structure of this temple. Other important shrines which are located in the town are Sharadamba Temple and the Keshab Temple.
