Nrityagram – Dance lover’s paradise
The first modern Gurukul, Nrityagram is well known as an enriched dance village in the district of Karnataka. It was created with an aim to be a community of dancers and a place, which would have nothing except dance. Consequently, Odissi danseuse Protima Gauri laid its foundation in the year 1990.
The place offers immense relief and perfection to all our five senses. Lying amidst the nature, one can enjoy dance, eat, sleep, talk around and become a “dancer of merit” who is away from all the negativities of this earth namely jealousy, greed, malice etc.
Though the place does not have any such special attraction for visitors; however, the Vasanta habba, a famous spring festival, is amongst the most exciting occasions, which is celebrated all night with live music and various dance forms practiced here.
Spread over an area of about 10 acres of land, Nrityagram was leased by the Karnataka Government and is now maintained and protected with the help of renowned artist, Gerard da Cunha. This school of art not only deals with practicing various art forms but also puts in great efforts in educating people about mythology, poetry, Indian literature, philosophy and aesthetics. Now days there are programs, where martial arts and some other dancing techniques are taught under the guidance of Guru Shishya Parampara.
For tourists, there is reservoir named Hesaraghatta, situated at a distance of about 5kms form Nrityagram. One can take pleasure in its serene environs and catching sights of different birds can be fun.
