Jageshwar-Explore the sacred city
The small settlement of Jageshwar is situated at an altitude of approximately 1870 meters on the top of a valley, named Jatganga. Jageshwar comes under the terrain of Kumaon and is of great religious significance. A fact related to Jageshwar is that it serves as a home to the 8th out of the 12 Jyotirlingas, called Nagesh, along with umpteen sculptures belonging to the 11th century and nearly 124 temples. Jageshwar is located at a distance of 12 km from Almora, which is a famous hill station.
Lord Shiva is worshipped as the main deity in Jageshwar temple, which is enclosed by a dense cover of Deodar forest adding grace to the overall ambience around the temple. The temple is considered to be very sacred. It portrays architecture style prevailing in the ancient times and stands as a perfect example of the architectural excellence.
Some of the other famous temples located in Jageshwar include the temple dedicated to goddess Chandi, Mahamritunjaya Temple, Surya Temple, Kuber Temple, Neo-Home Temple, Nanda Temple and Dandeshwar Temple. Dandeshwar temple is one of the biggest temples of Jageshwar, while Mahamritunjaya and Surya temples are the most ancient. The Archaeological museum is another attraction worth visiting.
Jageshwar Monsoon Festival is celebrated here with great enthusiasm in the month of Shravan. Another festival celebrated with equal spirits of joy is Maha Shivratri. One can easily reach Jageshwar, thanks to the well-connected network of roads. Air and rail transport facilities are also available. The closest airport is at Pantnagar while the nearest railway junction is at Kathgodam.
